Two counties twinned by art

Two counties from opposite ends of the country are preparing to join together today to celebrate their regions artists as Devon Artsculture and The Aurora Project present NE by SW. The Art Works Galleries in Newcastle will be hosting an exhibition throughout July and August which will twin together artists from the North East and South West to showcase the similarities in their artwork.

The theme of the exhibition is ‘Contemporary Landscapes and the Environment’ and will involve over 30 artists from Northumbria and Devon. Each artist from the North East will be twinned with an artist from the South West for the public and art lovers to compare medium, arts practice, style of work and even the artists themselves.

Brian Reid, Project Manager of The Aurora Project, said: “The idea for a group event came about in November 2006 when Devon Artsculture visited Newcastle and NE by SW was born – a twinning of counties and artists. “This is a tremendous opportunity to work with artists from another region and be involved in a truly innovative and unique event and we look forward to repeating the exhibition in Devon in 2008.“The work on show includes photography, painting, ceramics, glass, textile and sculptural work. Both Devon and Northumbria are regions inspired by hundreds of artists and this large group exhibition will showcase the talent of the artists from regions.

The exhibition is free and opens Thursday 5 July at The Art Works Galleries, Stepney Bank, Ouseburn, which all organisers and artists will be attending. It will run until August 31 and is hoped that a reciprocal show will take place in Devon next year.
