From the coal face to the car park?

A research team at Newcastle University are conducting an investigation into class and gender in women’s lives in the North East and would like women in the region to help out. The team feels that there has been little attention paid to women’s experience of economic and social change in the North East, and hope to address that as part of their new study.

This research explores women’s experiences of living, working, socialising and being in the North East and looks at the ways that de-industrialisation has impacted on women’s lives. They intend to explore the following objectives in a collection of informal interviews:

• How are inequalities and experiences, inclusions and exclusions, challenged or recreated in the economic and social reconstruction of the North East?
• What are women’s view on the past, present and future of the North East?
• What is happening to women’s lives, what is happening to the North East and how do you fit into this?

They would like to talk women across all age groups and locations, so if you are interested in this project (or know someone who might be) and would like to take part in an informal interview about where you live, work and grew up then contact the team. Interviews are guaranteed to be completely anonymous and confidential.
