Budding entrepreneur not just pottering around

A Sunderland entrepreneur has turned a hobby into a successful business, earning two degrees along the way. Ceramic artist Judith Britton is involved with various disciplines including teaching and commissioned work as well as creating her own work which she is preparing for exhibition in the near future. Her work also led to a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Masters Degree.

Judith, 36, from Washington, said: “I really enjoy working with young people and have incorporated my skills from my ceramics and art projects into my youth work. I deliver art based projects which deal with issues that effect young people’s everyday lives, for example body image and drugs and alcohol related issues whilst encouraging formal, social and political development in a classroom environment which has proved really successful.”

As well as her current youth classes Judith has worked with Anneline Watts, a business start up advisor at Social Enterprise Sunderland, to develop links with other local schools, colleges and groups to offer her classes as well as offering her services as a commissioning artist.

Anneline said: “Judith is very skilful at what she does and it has been a pleasure working with her, to help her offer her design service to a wider audience. She has a fabulous range of family inspired designs which can be customised to each individual family, incorporating hand casts in ceramics for example. “It is these unique designs which I think really give Judith her edge and when she is ready to exhibit work in her own right I am sure it will be a resounding success.”
