Former England goalie gives helping hand to North East skills

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East is giving skills development in the region a helping hand with the launch of a new campaign. The Skills Campaign, which has the theme ‘Our future - it’s in our hands’, was launched in the North East by former England goalkeeper, Peter Shilton.

He visited the region yesterday to encourage individuals and businesses to support the campaign by placing painted handprints on a giant poster, which spelt out the word ‘skills’. The skills campaign has been introduced by the LSC with the aim of transforming the way people think, feel and act towards learning and skills. The campaign aims to increase interest in learning and skills so that the demand and investment for basic skills, Level 2, 3 and 4 qualifications and beyond are improved.

Peter Shilton said: “Every job requires a certain level of skill and it is important to be proud of the contribution the skills of every individual make to our economy. The LSC in the North East is making a significant statement with this campaign about the need for individuals and employers to give training a greater priority so that this region can enjoy economic success on both domestic and international fronts.”

Chris Roberts, Regional Director, LSC North East, said: “One of the key ways that we can increase the demand for learning is by transforming the way individuals and businesses value learning and skills and the emphasis they place on them. This is becoming ever more important in an environment where we aim to dramatically increase the level of demand and investment around the type of learning people do and employers offer.”
