Gateshead MP praises new Baltic Campus

Tyne Bridge Labour MP, David Clelland, has heaped praise on Gateshead College’s £37m Baltic Campus following a tour around the site. When it opens in January 2008, the building will feature state-of-the-art facilities, which, it is hoped, will provide a high-class learning environment for 12,000 students.

The campus, located in the Baltic Business Quarter, will feature a spa and beauty suite; music recording and video studios with rehearsal rooms; fitness, weights and dance studios; craft and design workshops; as well as a bistro, cafes, art exhibition spaces and gardens.

Mr Clelland said: “I want each and every young person in Gateshead to have the opportunity to realise their full potential – the resources offered by the new campus do exactly that. It’s an exciting development, not only in education but also for the Gateshead quayside area and the wider Gateshead community.”

David Cheetham, Gateshead College principal, said: “We are not only investing in the future minds of the North East but by commissioning public art and offering bistros, spas and hair salons to all, we are investing in a space for the community. It is also important that we are contributing to the regeneration of the Baltic Business Quarter and the wider Gateshead Quays area, which we are sure will continue to prosper.”

The college has invested more than £60m in its campuses – the Automotive and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence at Team Valley, the Academy for Sport based at Gateshead International Stadium, the revolutionary Baltic Campus and a fourth yet to be announced.
