Badgers bother Basra
The award for Pez’s Favourite Quote of the Week for the weekending 13 July 2007goes to UK military spokesman Major Mike Shearer for his quite frankly unbeatable comment last Thursday. Major Shearer said: “We can categorically state that we have not released man-eating badgers into the area.”
The statement was made when the BBC reported that British troops in Iraq had been accused of releasing a plague of ferocious badgers on the populace of the city of Basra. Because some of the animals had been sighted near British military installations, rumours spread that UK forces were responsible. Assurances from the army and independent zoological sources reportedly did little to allay the fears of the local residents.
Housewife Suad Hassan claimed she had been attacked by one of the badgers as she slept. She said: “My husband tried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer. It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey.” Actually, maybe Mrs Hassan can have the award…
