New hotel brings jobs to Durham centre

A North East businesswoman has created of a luxury hotel in the heart of Durham City. For the last eight months a £2 million restoration programme has taken place to create bespoke hotel, Grafton House. Due to open later this summer, owner Mary Parker has embarked on a recruitment drive to secure a 30-strong team of skilled people from the North East to deliver a first-class service to guests.

Mary said: “Grafton House has been created with a lot of care and attention to detail, to give people a fabulous accommodation choice whilst visiting the North East. And everyone knows that the vital ingredient to the perfect break is good service. We are now looking to the region’s job market to help us find the best possible team of people for the hotel. We are looking for a wide range of skill sets and individuals of all ages to fill roles from receptionists to night porters.”

Grafton House, on South Street in Durham, looks onto the banks of the River Wear and Durham Cathedral and Castle. Remodelled at the turn of the last century from two dwellings by the same architect who carried out restoration work on Durham Castle, Grafton House served as a family home for the Charlton family until the last member died in 2003.

The launch of Grafton House intends to reflect the ambitious Durham 2020 Vision campaign, to improve the City’s visitor offering by providing a greater range of leisure attractions and accommodation choices for visitors to enjoy.
