Animal infiltration, day 2

Yesterday it was belligerent badgers in Basra, today it’s sneaky squirrels in Semnan.* Police in Iran are reported to have taken 14 squirrels into custody due to their suspected links with foreign intelligence agencies. According to Sky News, the reports came from the official Islamic Republic News Agency, who said that the rodents were found near the Iranian border two weeks ago, allegedly equipped with eavesdropping devices. When asked about the confiscation of the spy squirrels, the national police chief said: “I have heard about it, but I do not have precise information.”

A Foreign Office source, probably sniggering whilst doing so, told Sky News: “The story is nuts.”

*(Actually, they’re not in Semnan, but the line needed an Iranian city beginning with ‘S’. Poetic licence.)
