New era for Sunderland City Gateway

Plans to rejuvenate one of the major gateways into Sunderland city centre which could create more than 450 jobs have been submitted. A three star hotel, offices, 124 apartments and retail space are planned for Farringdon Row on the western approach into the city.

The scheme, led by regeneration company Sunderland arc and its partners, will be the first of a three phase £130m development for Farringdon Row. The scheme aims to deliver further housing, a retail and leisure offer and improve the appearance of the area through landscaping and public spaces, helping to revitalise the nearby Galleys Gill park area and linking to the neighbouring Vaux site. If permission is granted for the first phase of the scheme, developers CTP Ltd aim to start work on site by the beginning of next year.

Bryan Sanderson, chairman of Sunderland arc, said: “This new development on Farringdon Row is just the beginning of ambitious plans, which will inject new vibrancy and wealth into this area of the city. It will transform the western approach into Sunderland, evoking a sense of arrival at a special city and make the most of the site’s magnificent waterside views of the River Wear.”

Guy Illingworth, managing director at CTP, said: “Farringdon Row is such a crucial site to the future regeneration of Sunderland and we were determined to achieve an exemplary standard of design for this development. Together with Sunderland arc and our architects Faulkner Browns we will deliver a high quality mixed-use development which will create a step change in terms of quality of accommodation and architecture.”
