Alcan opens doors to prospective employers

Regional employers are to be invited to the Rio Tinto Alcan Smelter in Lynemouth, to tap into the skilled workforce who are set to lose their jobs when the plant closes in June.

On April 3 the factory will open its doors to businesses looking to expand their workforce, at an event which Caroline Kennedy, Rio Tinto Alcan’s UK human resources director hopes will help the skilled workforce showcase their skills.

She commented: “We have a vast range of skills and experience here and I am sure that North East employers will want to capitalise on the availability of those assets.

“Our workforce can hold their heads high and compete with the best when it comes to securing new employment.

“Companies in the North East who attend our Job Fair will be rewarded by meeting highly skilled, loyal people who have the passion and commitment that makes for the dedicated, high-performance workforce that we have enjoyed at Lynemouth.”

A wide range of skills have been developed at the plant in a number of areas including operations, leadership, administration, engineering, finance, and disciplines associated with operating a large manufacturing site.

Nissan is just one of the region’s leading employers which have already confirmed their attendance but Caroline Kennedy hopes to welcome companies of all sizes and disciplines with job opportunities to Lynemouth next month.

She added: “Our employees have excellent transferable skills and experience of working to the highest safety standards. Many drive various plant vehicles and operate a range of different tools and machines. They also have a vast experience of Lean Manufacturing techniques.”
