Northumbria University nominated for national award
A North East University has been shortlisted for a national award in recognition of its contribution to the social, cultural and economic development of the region.
Northumbria University’s Region, Engagement and Partnerships Strategy has been named in the Times Higher Education’s Leadership and Management Awards for the title of Outstanding Leadership and Management Team.
In the course of the 2010-11 academic year, Lucy Winskell was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor to lead in this area. A consultation with external stakeholders and staff across the University then resulted in the formation of a new team to address regional, engagement and partnership activities.
While Northumbria University has always been committed to engaging with local communities and organisations, it was clear to Lucy Winskell that the University could do even more to support the economic, cultural and social well being of the region.
She commented: “Universities have such a vital role to play in a successful development of business in all sectors and the creation of a cohesive team within the University who are aligned to a strategic vision has already brought great benefits to public and private sector organisations across the North East.
“We are just at the start of this area of work and we are thrilled that our efforts to date have been recognised at a national level by our peers across the higher education sector.”
This has allowed the University to form partnerships with key organisations including Newcastle, Northumberland and Gateshead Councils, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Brewin Dolphin.
Networks to help encourage sharing of partner opportunities have also been created, and the University has also launched a guide for employers on how to best access the skills, expertise and facilities available to them.
Andrew Lewis, Director for Policy, Strategy and Communications at Newcastle City Council,
confirmed the valuable work undertaken by the University.
He said: “Northumbria University has a vast, positive impact on Newcastle and the North East,”
“It recognises that its role goes beyond a focus on individual students, to a wider responsibility in support of the community as a whole. The Region, Engagement and Partnerships team is at the heart of this vital civic role.”
The Times Higher Award winners will be announced in London on 21 June.
