Wincanton win key Asda contract
Wincanton have won a five-year contract to manage Asda’s new £41 million distribution centre in Manchester.
The logistics firm secured the deal through a competitive tendering process, and will begin work on the contract in September. The 493,000 sq ft complex in Rochdale will be used to pick chilled and frozen foods for Asda stores. Wincanton will also be responsible for delivering to Asda stores along the M62 corridor.
Guy Elliott, Wincanton’s managing director for contract logistics, said: “We are delighted to announced this contract win as it demonstrates our commitment to growth in our core UK business.
“Wincanton already has strong links with the Asda brand, managing the general merchandise national distribution centre in Doncaster and running the company’s regional distribution centre in Larne, Northern Ireland.”
Wincanton were chosen after demonstrating a commitment to the local community, by issuing a pledge to work with the Rochdale Economic Development Agency to help unemployed individuals in the area back into the workplace.
The hub is set to generate 400 warehouse and transport jobs, and will meet increased capacity for its stores due to growth in the North West and Yorkshire, after the firm’s acquisition of Netto last year.
It will hold up to 3 million cases of chilled and frozen products each week.
