Cheshire-based oil and gas firm enjoy overseas success

A Cheshire design and manufacturing company has enjoyed success overseas after securing large contracts in Angola and is looking forward to potential deals in the Middle East.

Gen Ex Ltd is a Nantwich-based specialist in generators for oil and gas extraction sites. The business confirmed a £280,000 deal in Angola after receiving support from the UK Trade and Investment body (UKTI).

A multimillion dollar project in Abu Dhabi that requires expert generator equipment is also in discussions, while the firm celebrates its successes abroad so far.

The organisation’s exports generate approximately 70% of turnover and 80% of enquiries come from other countries.

Demand for Gen Ex’s high specification products, and expert knowledge in the niche oil and gas market, has been met with significant global growth for the company.

The firm create tailor-made solutions for oil, gas and petrochemical industries that require its specialist equipment and know-how.

Jim Sweeney, Managing Director of Gen Ex Design Ltd, said: “The industry we work in is becoming more sophisticated, with an increasing demand for bespoke equipment.”

Gen Ex received help from UKTI to explore markets in the Middle East, as well as getting help for trips to Singapore and Italy to meet new clients.

Mr Sweeney continued: “UKTI has been extremely helpful to us, and is able to offer assistance with export documents and processes, as well as visits to the markets – requirements which are essential due to the nature of our business.”

Since UKTI’s involvement with Gen Ex, the outfit has won a bid with an Asian oil and gas conglomerate to deliver a hazardous area generator for a floating production storage vessel for Total.

The programme that Gen Ex have been involved in, the “Gateway to Global Growth” scheme, helps businesses with the challenges of approaching new markets.

Paul Wilcox, International Trade Adviser with UKTI North West, said: “[Gen Ex] is a great example of how you can grow your business by developing unique products which comply with the needs and specifications of the different overseas markets, as well as being proof that perseverance pays off.

“We at UKTI are here to help with market research from our dedicated teams in embassies and consulates around the world, as well as providing general practical advice and support with overseas trade missions.

“We would therefore urge other firms thinking of developing their export strategy this year to get in touch and see how we can help.”
