South Shields community given housing and retail boost
The official green light has been given for a new housing and retail programme development on the Parkway Estate of South Shields in South Tyneside.
The scheme, situated on The Wynde, will offer 36 new homes and a new neighbourhood retail outlet for the local community. The programme has been in the proposal stages for the past 18-months but the start of 2013 will signal significant onsite development.
“The boards are now up promoting the new programme, which means there’s light at the end of the tunnel for residents, who have shown great patience over previous months. The scheme is now a reality and the shopping unit will hopefully make life easier for people on the estate,” said Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ernest Gibson, who is also ward councillor for Whiteleas at South Tyneside Council.
Councillor Gibson has championed the project alongside fellow ward councillors Councillor Bill Brady and Councillor Doreen Purvis. It forms part of South Tyneside Council’s regeneration vision for the Borough.
The housing element of the programme will be situated on the former Kwik Save store and Murtagh Diamond House site next to Foxden, with the 1000 square foot retail unit being located adjacent to the housing.
South Tyneside Council is open to receiving applications of interest from the business community in relation to the available retail opportunity. People should contact the property team by calling 0191 427 7000 or by emailing Property.Enquiries@southtyneside.gov.uk
