Sunderland graduate developer wins at national awards
A young developer at Houghton le Spring’s 4th Aspect has scooped Intern of the Year at an awards night organised by Sunderland University.
Michael Simpson joined the internet marketing software firm in May 2012, initially on a 6 months Graduate Internship via Sunderland University, and proved himself such a valued staff member and was rewarded with a full time role with the company.
One of the judges said: “From a short list of ten they needed to choose three and found it very difficult indeed. However one profile kept standing out and that was Michael Simpson’s.”
Michael was initially recruited to carry out research and database updates, along with software development support and second-line helpdesk functions.
After overhearing a conversation Michael expressed an interest in developing an IOS (Apple) mobile app which would enable users to check their website rankings on any of the major search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo) on a worldwide basis.
His initiative was taken on board and the app he produced has been downloaded by over 1000 users in just 5 months. The app has received great reviews via the Apple store.
Michael not only achieved the complete design and build of the app but also contributed to the main cloud-based application and cleansing of the 4 aspect database too.
CEO Dave Glynn said: “We couldn’t be happier with Michael’s performance and he is a credit to Sunderland University, 4th aspect and the North East’s software industry.”
The company have plans to further deliver the app across Android, Windows and Blackberry mobile devices.
