North Shields leads the way for Small Business Saturday

North Shields is set to fly the flag for the North East at Small Business Saturday next month.

A number of stores and businesses in the town have signed up to be part of the event on the 7th of December, with the town set to lead the way in the region with a range of offers to promote business activity in North Shields.

Small Business Saturday is an exciting new initiative to encourage people to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their community, both on ‘Small Business Saturday’ and thereafter.

The idea originated in America in 2010, and is held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the initiative generated a lot of custom for small, local businesses and, last year, achieved $5.5 billion in sales.

As the UK’s small businesses provide almost two thirds of private sector employment and nearly half of private sector turnover it was decided at a national level to hold the event in the UK with cross party support.

Businesses in North Shields have joined together to offer a range of discounts and special offers to the public on this one day only. There are over 40 go-ahead small businesses in North Shields taking part on 7th December.

The goods and services on offer encompass the whole spectrum of customer needs with offers from florists to clothes boutiques, hair and beauty salons to cafes, hardware stores to pet shops, and many, many more.

Commenting on the day Alan Campbell MP for Tynemouth stated: “North Shields has again shown initiative and drive to encourage visitors to the town to use local traders for their shopping and I look forward to seeing people in the town supporting these businesses which are so important to our local economy”.
