Sage Gateshead take over Gateshead Old Town Hall

The Sage Gateshead has taken over the Gateshead Old Town Hall to be run as a new venue, open to the public.

The Grade II listed building will host performances and workshops for music making, bringing the Town Hall back to its historic use as a venue.

Gateshead Council will continue to cover most of the running costs of the Town Hall while Sage Gateshead will aim to make it a resource for local communities.

Katherine Zeserson, director of Learning and Participation at Sage Gateshead, said: “Gateshead Council approached us to take over the running of the building as they wanted new life breathed into the venue and to turn it into a vibrant, buzzing hub for the community.

“We were very keen to take the project on. We did a feasibility study to explore its viability and from this we knew it could work and so set about creating a variety of music-making workshops, classes and performances that would lend themselves to this amazing space.

“It also now home to several creative organisations who have taken studio space in the venue and we can’t wait to officially open the rest of the site to the general public.”

A free launch party for the venue will take place on January 11 from 11am until late.
