Newcastle among UK's top growth cities

Newcastle has ranked in the top 20 fastest growing towns and cities in the UK, according to a national property firm’s annual guide.

Lambert Smith Hampton’s research puts Newcastle 14th overall and rates the city as the 18th most highly educated in the UK.

The firm’s ‘Vitality Index’ scores towns and cities across 20 different datasets including business activity, economic output, affluence, sustainability and property data.

Darron Barker, head of LSH’s Newcastle office, said: “It is pleasing to see that Newcastle is sitting comfortably within the top 20 UK cities position because the region offers a great platform for economic growth with its five universities, its increasing number of successful business start-ups and the general ‘can do’ attitude of the average north-easterner.

“We are also fortunate in having a large amount of developable land in the wider North East region, backed by the will to bring it forward, so if the indicators are correct, I feel we should soon be seeing a positive uplift in the commercial property sector.”

The top ten looked like this:

1. Cambridge

2. Guildford

3. Brighton

4. St Albans

5. Reading

6. Wokingham

7. Maidenhead

8. Warwick

9. Milton Keynes

10. Bournemouth, Edinburgh, Reigate (joint place)
