CPO set to progress major Cheshire development project
The £80m regeneration of a key area in Northwich has taken a major step forward.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has made a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the remaining land required for the development at Barons Quay, which is set to create up to 1,500 jobs.
The official CPO notice will appear in the local press this week. The closing date for objections is 7 February 2014.
If any objections are received the Secretary of State may appoint an inspector to chair a public inquiry. This would take place later this year.
The Council already owns 93 percent of the land required for the major retail and leisure scheme.
The purpose of the CPO is to secure the remainder of the land so the development can go ahead.
Councillor Herbert Manley, Executive Member for Growth and Innovation, said: “The CPO is the next step in delivering this hugely important scheme which will create 1,500 jobs and transform Northwich into one of the North West’s busiest market towns by 2016.”
The Council has approved the £80m riverside development which is designed to enhance and increase footfall to the existing town centre with pedestrian links to Witton Street, Market Square and the new Memorial Court leisure complex.
In addition to a cinema and an Asda superstore, Barons Quay will include cafes, restaurants, shops, new homes and hundreds of car parking spaces.
