Liverpool contractor Riverside appointed by Hull council for £84 million care facilities
Hull City Council has announced the appointment of a contractor for an £84 million project to design, build and run three Extra Care facilities in the city.
Hull was the only local authority to retain Department of Health funding to deliver Extra Care accommodation after the government review of spending in 2010.
Two contractors have been fighting it out to build the apartments over the last year and submitted final bids towards the end of last year.
Riverside, the winning contractor owns or manages around 50,000 homes with around 2,600 staff and a turnover of £257 million.
It is expected that contracts will be signed in October this year and building work will start following this, ready for residents to move into their new homes in 2016.
Councillor Helena Spencer, portfolio holder for the Prevention & Safeguarding Children & Young People and Adults said: “We are pleased to announce the appointment of Riverside as the contractor for this much needed and anticipated scheme.
“We look forward to working in partnership with Riverside to develop high quality facilities for vulnerable people across the city.”
Leann Hearne, group director of Care and Support from Riverside said: “Riverside is delighted to be named as preferred bidder to deliver over 300 extra care apartments with our partners Wates Living Space across three sites in Hull.
“Our experienced team are looking forward to working with the multi-agency specialists to improve housing and health for people in Hull.
“The schemes will be vibrant places allowing our customers to live independently and participate in their local community.
“We are pleased to be partnering Hull City Council as we have a longstanding partnership with them providing ground breaking services for young vulnerable people and older adults.”
Susan Peak, from the Department of Health funding the project said: “The Department of Health is delighted to see the progress being made by the Hull Extra Care PFI project in reaching the important milestone of Preferred Bidder appointment.
“This is a valuable project, with its potential to deliver improved and high-quality support for the elderly and vulnerable living in Hull, and the Department looks forward to eventual contract signature.”
