New £650k transport hub for Kirklees town

Plans for Heckmondwike will provide a £650k transport hub for the town to replace current bus stops dispersed round an area known as ‘The Green.’

The transport hub project has been led by Kirklees Council but has involved representatives from Metro and the bus operator Arriva.

It uses a site which was given planning permission back in 2008 but then stood vacant due to budget constraints and problems with land acquisition.

The aims of the transport hub are to reduce traffic congestion within the town centre and to improve interchange between bus services and other modes of travel and improve passenger confidence in these

Kirklees Council Leader David Sheard, said: “If the plans are approved a start on site by the summer is envisaged with work being completed by March 2015.

“The new development will not only provide a much improved transport facility in Heckmondwike centre, but will enhance the area as this site has been vacant for a number of years.”
