Yorkshire & Humber firms honoured at Queen’s Awards
Yorkshire & Humber firms have won places in the Queen’s Award list this year, with eight winning under the International Trade category, and one a piece for Innovation and Enterprise Promotion.
Yorkshire International Trade winners included; Abbey Forged Products Ltd. (Sheffield) steel manufacturers for the oil industry, A-Safe UK (Elland, West Yorkshire) who increased turnover 741% over the last three years in plastic barrier manufacturing, Carnaud Metalbox Engineering Ltd. (Shipley) machinery manufacturers, Dismatec Ltd. (Sheffield) suppliers to the glass manufacturing industry, Harvard Engineering (Normanton, West Yorkshire) Melett Ltd (Barnsley) engine parts supplier, The Alco Valves Group (Brighouse) Turner & Townsend plc. (Horsforth, Leeds) a construction consultancy.
International Trade accounted for 110 UK winners, who have to prove their business has achieved substantial growth in overseas earnings and in commercial success (for their business size and sector.)
- Rotherham’s Roy Hatfield Ltd., a company which recycles waste gypsum from ceramics and plasterboard after anticipating the banning of the substance and can process 50k tonnes of waste a year, won in the Innovation category.
Innovation prize winners have to demonstrate that their business has substantially improved in areas of performance and commercial success by either outstanding innovation.
Innovation achievements are assessed for: invention, design or production; performance of services and products; marketing and distribution; or after-sales support of goods or services.
- Eric Binns, Calderdale council’s business enterprise officer who ran a self-employment support programme, which contributed to 600 startups in the area won the Enterprise Promotion category of which there were only 8 winners in the whole of the UK
The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion recognises those who have played an “outstanding” role in promoting the growth of business enterprise and/or entrepreneurial skills and attitudes in others.
