Young talent being kept in York with 100 day apprenticeship challenge
York businesses involved in the 100 Day Apprenticeship Challenge have already obtained 61 pledges create new vacancies in 53 days for local young people.
The campaign, which started during National Apprenticeship Week and is led by City of York Council in partnership with local providers, aims to get 100 pledges for new Apprenticeship vacancies in 100 days.
Councillor James Alexander, Labour leader of City of York Council said:“It is pleasing to see so many businesses supporting this campaign and pledging to create new Apprenticeship vacancies.
“It is important that young talent is kept within the city so it is particularly pleasing that young people are seeing more opportunities to start their career here helping further the city’s rise in jobs and growth.”
York-based Fera’s Science Apprenticeship Programme has seen 13 of the original 18 apprentices successfully applying for positions with the laboratory, through external open competition.
James Quill, apprentice team manager, said: “The apprentices have been placed throughout the organisation. The range of work experience gained by each apprentice provides them with a high quality, broad science skill set which will leave them well placed for employment with Fera, or any other science-based organisation.
“This experience will help them choose a future career path with greater understanding and knowledge.”
The council’s Apprenticeship Brokerage Service is available to support businesses and make it easier for them to recruit an apprentice, helping with job descriptions, finding the best local talent and helping to access up to £3000 in government funded recruitment grants.
Businesses who have pledged to recruit an apprentice include BBC Radio York, The Distance, Minster FM, Inc Dot (Design and Print), Hethertons Solicitors and many others.
The York Apprenticeship Challenge is running from March through to the June 10. Providers involved in the campaign are Askham Bryan College, Babcock Training, ETS (Electronic Technology Services), JTL Training, YH Training Services, York College, York Learning and City of York Council (York Apprenticeship Hub).
