Infrastructure projects are key to economic growth in Yorkshire says CBI

The delivery of key infrastructure, energy and housing projects across Yorkshire are essential if the recent economic gains of recent months are to be maintained - according to the CBI’s Director of Business Environment.

Speaking at an event last night at Irwin Mitchell’s offices in Sheffield, Nicola Walker from the CBI told attendees that a successful construction industry was vital for sustainable economic growth, but political risk had to be addressed to provide global investors with the long-term confidence to invest in the UK.

She added that more could be done by both government and industry to engage the general public on the need for major projects and the benefits of upgrading our infrastructure networks and housing stock.

The roundtable event at Irwin Mitchell’s offices was attended by 30 key business leaders and University figures from across the city.

Julie Morrissy, construction partner at Irwin Mitchell in Sheffield, said: “We were delighted to host the CBI at what was a well-attended and enlightening event about the construction, energy and manufacturing sectors.

“In addition to hearing about the CBI’s work to support energy intensive industries, drive energy diversification and how we can boost Britain’s infrastructure including housing, it was a great opportunity for attendees to discuss any challenges they face.

“It was clear that conditions remain tough in the market and although output is still 13% below the pre-recession peak, the event was positive with plenty of optimism in relation to the future.”

Nicola Walker spearheads the CBI’s campaigns to boost investment in infrastructure, promote the development of the low-carbon economy and ensure the resilience of the construction industry. Prior to this she was the head of the CBI’s infrastructure and environment team - a role that steers the CBI’s work on economic infrastructure, transport, environment, planning and property policy.
