BIM Academy launch consultancy service following Sydney Opera House work
Northumbria University-based BIM Academy have launched a new consultancy arm following their work on a range of projects including the Sydney Opera House.
The Ryder Architecture and Northumbria University joint organisation will now offer BIM for Asset and Facilities Management (BAFM).
It will see BIM Academy use digital information and 3D models to deliver work.
In 2012, a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between BIM Academy, Teesside University and Ryder Architecture enabled BIM Academy to research solutions for the challenges facing industry in the utilisation of BIM for Asset and Facilities Management.
In 2013, following nine months of detailed analysis of industry practices, gaining a sound understanding of current workflows, technologies and client requirements, BIM Academy beat off stiff international competition to secure the commission to develop the BIM4FM technical specification for Sydney Opera House.
The Sydney Opera House project involved a detailed consultation process with Opera House personnel on current and future operational needs, a review of the current disparate systems that are used to operate the building and consultation with the software market in order to soft test the proposed solution, ensuring confidence that the proposed solution was deliverable in 2014.
This work led to the creation of a detailed technical specification and model management plan which enables the market to tender for and deliver a solution that meets the Opera House’s long term requirements.
Peter Barker, BIM Academy managing director, said: “Taking an independent and platform neutral approach, BIM Academy understand that many off the shelf solutions are expensive, complex and do not always match a client’s specific needs.
“BIM Academy seek to work with clients to deliver an analysis of their business requirements and then support the specification, procurement, implementation and maintenance of a tailored solution, specific to, and efficient for, that client, verifying and improving the consistency of operational data throughout the process.”
