Liverpool Students take part in Malala Day #strongerthan campaign
Students from The Studio School in Liverpool are taking part in Malala Day 2014, a day for people to get involved in an international social media campaign organised by the Malala Fund.
Malala Day, which takes place globally each year on Malala’s birthday 14 July, is inspired by Malala Yousafzai, the teenage activist who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban. In October 2012, aged 15, Malala was targeted and shot on her school bus after publically voicing her views on the rights of all children to an equal education.
Liverpool-based global organisation World Merit joined The Studio School for Malala Day in an open discussion about education and equality challenges facing young people around the world. The Malala Day #strongerthan campaign will see people showcase what they are “stronger than” across social media platforms. Students from The Studio School were given an insight into the difficulties faced by children in developing countries, many of whom are denied a right to basic education. Malala’s incredible story was shared with the students, ahead of her appearance in Liverpool at World Merit Day on July 24 at the BT Convention Centre.
Following a remarkable recovery, Malala has refused to be silenced and speaks all over the world, inspiring young people to realise the power of their voices and make positive changes.
Speaking about Malala Day, Malala Yousafzai said;
“Malala Day is not my day,” she said in a statement. “It is the day of every girl and every boy. It is a day when we come together to raise our voices, so that those without a voice can be heard.”
Malala Yousafzai is today in Nigeria campaigning for the safe release of the Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by the Boko Haram militant group three months ago. She has met with parents of some of the kidnapped girls and has vowed that she will “stand up for them”.
Malala will come to Liverpool as the keynote speaker at World Merit Day, the ‘What Matters?’ Conference and Concert on Thursday July 24 2014 at the BT Convention Centre. The only youth event as part of the International Festival for Business (IFB), World Merit Day brings world class speakers to Liverpool in an event that will inspire, educate and motivate young Millennials to realise the power of their voices. Topics including gender equality, climate change, entrepreneurship, media, film, music and sport will be addressed via a series of inspirational speakers, workshops, seminars and opportunities.
