Moor Allerton’s Lady Captain, Lyn Fromant, added a charitable twist to her Lady Captain’s Day this year. The format was specifically altered to allow the lady members to contribute to Leeds Mencap, the Leeds based charity created for, and by, people with learning disabilities.
The day dawned bright and sunny and stayed that way apart from one brief shower – the promised thunderstorms didn’t materialise so nothing marred the fun and games.
A shotgun start kicked off the competitive part of the programme, with the overall winner, Mary Martin, coming in with a very respectable net 73. This was followed by a light lunch and some entertaining chipping and putting competitions. A cocktail reception, high tea and prize giving presentation rounded off what was a very rewarding day, raising over £300 for the charity.
Leeds Mencap CEO Cath Lee said “On behalf of Leeds Mencap, I’d like to thank Moor Allerton Golf Club and in particular Lyn Fromant for organising such an event which was a hugely successful day. We very much appreciate the support given by Moor Allerton Golf Club’s Ladies’ Section in its fundraising efforts which will allow us to continue supporting families and individuals with learning disabilities.”

About Leeds Mencap: Leeds Mencap is a local independent charity providing support for children and adults with a learning disability, along with their families and carers. It has been running since 1953.
The charity supports more than 300 families a week, offering a range of services such as parent support projects, youth clubs, social groups, play schemes and residential care. Although Leeds Mencap is affiliated with National Mencap, the charity is an independently-run charity and has to secure all its own funding.
About Learning Disabilities: A learning disability is caused by the way the brain develops but the causes can vary. Most develop before a baby is born, during birth or because of a serious illness in early childhood. However, sometimes the cause of learning disabilities can’t be found. People who have learning disabilities may find it harder to learn new skills, understand information or to interact with other people. A learning disability is ever-present and usually has a significant impact on a person’s life.
Leeds Mencap recognises that there are many types of learning disabilities. A learning disability can be mild, moderate or severe and some people with a learning disability may also have other physical and emotional conditions. Take a look at an extensive list of types of learning disabilities.
There are an estimated 15,000 people in Leeds with learning disabilities.
