Leeds property developers given backing for revival of Regent Street "eyesore"
Leeds-based Gregory Property Group developers have got backing to revive a redundant site on Regent Street in Leeds city centre.
The “much needed” facilities to the local area have been given support by Leeds city councillors.
The proposal, which will also create many new jobs, is expected to gain planning approval by the end of the month.
National discount food store Aldi has already committed to occupy a new 16,500 sq. ft. store and Pure Gym is also taking 18,500 sq. ft. for a 24 hour fitness facility on the site that was formerly a Reg Vardy Renault dealership.
A further 7,500 sq. ft. unit is proposed for a bulky goods retail operator.
This is good news for the local community according to Leeds based developer Gregory Property Group which is to develop the 2.50 acre site. Director, Richard Tovey said, “The site has been vacant since September 2008 despite major marketing efforts.
“It has become an eyesore but these plans will transform and regenerate the area where there is proven demand for these facilities.”
The north eastern edge of Leeds city centre has witnessed a high population growth with 72,000 residents now living within a five minute drive time, but there has been no real improvement to the convenience shopping and leisure provision.“
Gregory Property Group hopes to start on site early in the New Year with a view to a completion late summer 2015.
