Morrisons distribution centre set to bring 200 jobs to Knowsley

Supermaket chain Morrisons is set to open a 20,000 sq ft distribution centre in Knowsley in November, creating around 200 jobs.

The company has taken a 15 year lease on the logistics hub, sited on the Academy Business Park which is owned by Manchester-based Orbit Developments.

When fully operational, Morrisons say it will employ around 200 people with around 54 vans servicing the Merseyside and North Wales area. It comes as a result of extra demand created by the successful launch of the firm’s online services earlier this year.

The chain has well over 500 stores in its portfolio with plans for expansion across the UK underway.

The new distribution centre will service the Northwest and North Wales with other distribution centres in Manchester, Birmingham, Warwickshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and London already up and running.

Tony Jones, Managing Director of Orbit Developments commented: “We are delighted to see that Morrisons have chosen to open their Merseyside distribution centre at Academy Business Park, which is part of Knowsley Industrial & Business Park.

“This will now lead to the redevelopment of the business park at Knowsley which will see a speculative new build of 100,000 sq ft distribution unit. The scheme will eventually consist of 260,000 sq ft of new build industrial units”.

“Knowsley council representatives have been instrumental in making this happen”.
