Three North East Tesco stores set to close and cut over 100 jobs
3 North East Tesco supermarkets are set to close in the North East, which will see the over 100 jobs lost in the region.
The Bedlington superstore and express stores at Whitley Bay and York Road Hartlepool will shut down as 43 Tesco stores nationwide are set to close. Altogether 2000 staff will lose their jobs.
In total, 18 Express, 12 Metro, seven superstores and six Homeplus stores are shutting their doors.
Whitley Bay and York Road will be the first to close on March 15, whilst the Bedlington superstore will soon follow on April 4.
The closures are part of Tesco’s recently announced cost cutting strategy.
Tesco chief executive, Dave Lewis, told the bbc: “Our priority is to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and, wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco.”
Moreover, Mr Lewis described the decision behind the closures as “exceptionally difficult”.
