Vernacare wins North West Business Masters Award for manufacturing

Bolton-based Vernacare, whose innovative infection prevention products are sold across the globe and used in 96% of UK hospitals, has won a prestigious manufacturing award.

The company has won the Large Manufacturer Award in the North West Business Masters.

Vernacare pioneered an innovative system of hygienic patient toileting and washing over 50 years ago. Its single-use bedpans, urinals, wash bowls and other containers are made from renewable natural fibre and manufactured in Bolton. These products offer a safer alternative to traditional reusable containers that can spread infection if not properly decontaminated.

The company also manufactures Vortex disposal machines that provide a quick, environmentally friendly and hygienic method for disposing of the single-use products and human waste.

In recent years Vernacare has made a multi-million pound investment in an automated production system, which helps the company maintain its exemplary quality record. Investment in Lean training is also helping to drive efficiencies across the business. Such improvements have won praise from industry, with Vernacare winning a coveted Best Factory Award and gaining a commendation in the prestigious Manufacturer of the Year Awards.

Steve Birch, Operations Manager at Vernacare, said: “Our success is testimony to our talented team that enabled us to produce 160 million units last year and maintain our enviable quality record of producing leak-proof pulp containers for medical purposes. This is one reason why Vernacare’s products are considered to be the gold standard by infection prevention practitioners across the globe. I am immensely proud of the team and their combined efforts in obtaining this prestigious award.”

Vernacare has also won a Queen’s Award for Innovation and its R&D team is working on the next generation of infection control products. Recent product launches include a single-use female urinal and a new easy-clean commode chair,.that is helping to reduce the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections.

The company’s products are exported to 48 countries, including Sierra Leone, where they are helping to reduce the spread of Ebola.

Emma Sheldon, Global Marketing Director for Vernacare, said: “We are proud to receive this award and be classed among the best of North West businesses. In our 51st year we continue to grow and have our sights on increasing international trade via partnerships with healthcare providers in new and existing overseas markets.”

The awards, at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, were attended by more than 280 people and hosted by BBC journalist and presenter Nina Warhurst.
