Sainsbury’s to cut 800 more jobs as supermarket wars wage on

Sainsbury’s has announced plans to cut 800 roles in an attempt to restructure its in-store operations,

The decision, which follows the supermarket’s plans to cut 500 office roles, will mostly affect those working night shifts in stores across the UK.

In a statement, the supermarket chain said: “Redeployment opportunities will be available for most affected colleagues and a consultation is now underway to discuss individuals’ options. However, it is expected that these proposals will result in around 800 fewer roles.”

Roger Burnley, retail and operations director said: “These are exceptionally difficult decisions to make and we have not taken them lightly.

I recognise that this will be a challenging time for many of our colleagues and we will do everything we can to support them and help them move through this period of uncertainty as quickly as possible.“

The news follows an announcement earlier this week from rival supermarket Tesco, which reported a £6.4bn pre-tax statutory loss - the biggest loss in the firm’s history.

UK-based supermarket chains have been suffering as late while European low-cost retailers like Aldi are continuing to grow with plans to open more store across the country in the next few years.

Morrisons has also anticipating job cuts, after announcing plans to restructure head office. However, the Yorkshire-based retailer aims to create thousands of jobs as it attempts to redevelop its strategic focus.
