First hoardings erected in Warrington’s new Bridge Street Quarter development
The new Bridge Street Quarter development in Warrington has received a splash of history and colour, as the first of the hoardings from local students has been unveiled.
Children from Culcheth Primary School created a display that sheds light on a portion of the market’s past. It is the first of eight panels exploring Warrington’s 760-year history that will surround the construction site for the Bridge Street Quarter Regeneration Project, with the rest set to be revealed in the coming months.
By engaging with people in the community, the council hopes to inspire locals to think about the future of the market. To do so, it will complement the panels with artists’ impressions of how the new scheme and market will look upon completion.
Once finished, the £107m Bridge Street Quarter Project will create a new commercial and leisure space within the centre of the town, incorporating a revamped market hall, civic centre and multiplex cinema, as well as a public square featuring restaurants and cafés.
Property firm Muse Developments, which has offices in Salford Quays, Manchester, is working in partnership with the council to deliver the redevelopment project.
Councillor Mike Hannon, the deputy leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “These panels will be up for quite a while whilst work on this important project continues and what better way to brighten these hoardings up than with colourful and educational artwork from our local schools.”
Opening in 2019, the revamped market hall will incorporate the former Boots building façade, located on Bridge Street, as one of several entrances. The building’s opposite side will feature entrances that lead out onto the new square, which will be situated in front of the cinema. The market will also be accessible from the building’s two other sides, which it is hoped will drive up footfall and stimulate business.
