Margate’s Dreamland Cinema to be restored to former glory

Thanet District Council have set out plans to restore the Dreamland Cinema and multi-purpose venue back to its original 1930’s design.

The modernist Art Deco Dreamland cinema, which is located along Margate’s seafront, has been an iconic part of the skyline for eight decades.

During its heyday, the the Kent entertainment centre, which featured a cinema, Pleasure Park, arcades, café and dance hall, was rivalled only by Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach.

Along with the reopening of Dreamland Pleasure Park, following an £18m restoration, the cinema project will further enhance the resort town’s former tourist appeal.

The plans by Thanet District Council, which owns the site, have also received the support of the Margate Conservation Area Advisory Group (MCAAG).

A spokesperson for MCAAG said: “This flagship heritage project has enormous cultural and economic value that could have significant long-term regeneration benefit.”

Constructed from 1933-1935, and designed by Julian Leathart and WF Granger, the Dreamland Cinema building showcases the German-inspired approach to modernist architecture which became the essential style for cinemas throughout England.

The prospective renovations will enhance the historic and architectural features of the site, in line with the National Planning Policy Framework, as a reflection of its cultural significance to the town and the nation.

Cllr Hunter Stummer-Schmertzing, Thanet District Council cabinet member responsible for Tourism, commented: “The investment being put into the redevelopment of Margate’s seafront is paying off, with visitors flocking for some sun, sea, sand and culture. It is important that we continue working for the future of the town by restoring our rich past; preserving these landmarks for generations to come.”
