Robotics network launches in Greater Manchester

A new network has been established in Greater Manchester with the aim of discussing the role that robots and automated systems will play in the future of the economy.

The Northern Robotics Network (NRN), which saw its launch in a recent conference held at MediaCityUK, will aim to stimulate discourse on the subject of robot technology and the wealth-generating applications it has for the business community.

NRN chairman Paul Mort said: “This network we are forming means we can help to fast-forward many small and larger businesses across into global markets.

“The application of this technology is diverse and includes food manufacturing, the nuclear industry, dementia care, the aerospace industry, automotive and many more.”

He added: “The principles of it are already all around us in everyday technology. By developing these opportunities in partnership we can stay ahead and seize the wider market opportunities.”

The network was founded by the University of Manchester’s Professor John Gray, the University of Salford’s Samia Nefti-Meziani, and Geoff Pegman of Manchester-based robotics and automation company RU Robots.

Commenting on the role of robotics in engineering, Dr David Bailey, the chief executive of the North West Aerospace Alliance, said: “The skills shortage in engineering and advanced manufacturing are well documented.

“This technology gives us the opportunities to further develop the people we already employ to progress and manage these new systems, increasing their prospects for the future.”

David added: “There is also the opportunity to engage new talent, as there is a wide range of career opportunities in this field.”

Several hundred delegates attended the event to showcase the progress their companies had so far made under the GAMMA (Growing Autonomous Mission Management Applications) programme, a three-year project that will see the government invest £9m to encourage innovation and growth in the industry.

Partners of the GAMMA programme include the universities of Lancaster, Manchester, UCLan, Salford and Liverpool, as well as the North West Aerospace Alliance, the Regional Growth Fund and Lancashire County Council.
