Morrisons announces the 11 stores set to close

Bradford-based supermarket chain Morrisons has identified which 11 stores it is planning to close as a cost-cutting strategy that will see 900 jobs cut.

The announcement of stores closing came just last week, when Morrisons revealed its sales and profit figures are still in recovery mode.

Along with the restructuring cost of £20m for the 11 closed stores, the supermarket chain also reported a significant decrease in pre-tax profit, after £9m net profit on property, which was £126m. This is an alarming drop from 2014/15’s figure of £239m.

The 11 stores closing are:

  • West Bromwich
  • Salford
  • Burnham-on-Sea
  • Castletown in Sunderland
  • Clevedon
  • Little Hulton
  • Northallerton
  • Oldbury
  • Shildon
  • Streatham
  • Tyldesley

In addition, the supermarket chain recently closed ten smaller supermarkets and 23 M locals.

When releasing Morrisons’ financial results last week, David Potts, chief executive, said: “Since joining Morrisons, I have been struck by the passion and commitment of all our colleagues, and I want to thank them for their continued good work. Our colleagues have the key role in delivering an improved shopping trip for customers both in stores and online.

“It will be a long journey. We approach the challenge with energy, confidence and many strengths, particularly our strong balance sheet and cash flow, which enables investment in improving the customer shopping trip.”
