Wakefield security firm’s #AlarmSetGo campaign
Calder Security launches #AlarmSetGo campaign
Around 40% of UK householders have a burglar alarm in their home but 34% of those admit to rarely bothering to use it. The period from the clocks going back in October to Christmas is statistically the worst time for burglaries so local security company, Calder Security, is on a mission to educate people on the value of setting their alarm to maximise the protection they already have.
Dark evenings and the increase in valuable items people have in their homes as they buy Christmas gifts always lead to a spike in burglaries at this time of year. Burglar alarms are obviously one of the best ways to protect your home against a break in and yet many people – around 34% - who have one, don’t actually bother to set it. Perhaps it’s not working properly, they’ve forgotten the code, they think just the visible deterrent is enough or plain laziness; whatever the issue, there are 4 clear reasons to start using that alarm:
- Burglars will look for signs to see whether the alarm has been set or not including listening out for beeps as you leave (or return) or looking through windows/glass door panels to see the alarm panel
- Some will break in anyway; they know that they would have 60-90 seconds to get away should the panel start bleeping and knowing that a third don’t bother to set it may be deemed a risk worth taking
- It may invalidate your insurance if you have declared a burglar alarm on your home insurance and you are burgled after failing to set it, that could easily invalidate your insurance meaning you would have no claim
- It protects you when you’re in the house as well; some will regularly set their alarm when they go out but don’t at night when they’re in bed. A triggered alarm will not only scare burglars away, it will alert you to their presence
Sarah Ainslie, Marketing Manager at Calder Security said:
“We know more than most how distressing a burglary can be but it’s particularly harrowing to know that you had the protection at your disposal to prevent it. A third of people could be protecting their property with an alarm that is already installed and paid for and yet choose not to. That doesn’t make sense.
For the most part, even an alarm that isn’t working properly, or that’s code is unknown, can be easily be restored to full working order so there really isn’t any excuse. The #AlarmSetGo campaign is not only about demonstrating the value of setting your alarm, but providing solutions for the reasons why people don’t.“
Calder Security is posting a range of advice for helping people to set their alarms on their website, Facebook and Twitter and hope that it prevents at least a few burglaries over the festive season.
