New East Leeds development to be fully erected in just two weeks

A new scheme on Vinery Terrace, East Leeds, has made major developments after the majority of the building was constructed off-site, meaning it will be fully erected over the next two weeks.

The first modules were delivered on Monday morning (Jan 4th) and by the end of next week, all of the 48 modules will be in place, ready for the next phase of construction.

Due to be completed in Spring, this purpose-built facility will provide a new home for Leeds Mencap, enabling the organisation for people with a learning disabilities to expand its services to reach more people with learning disabilities from all over the city.

Twice the size of Leeds Mencap’s current site, the new building will also provide a home for several other groups and activities, giving residents a space for socialising and learning.

The new centre represents a £2.6m investment in the Richmond Hill and Burmantofts ward and is set to benefit around 2,000 people each year. Funding has been provided by a range of trusts, local companies and generous individuals, including a £1m grant from Jimbo’s Fund, managed by Leeds Community Foundation.

Cath Lee, CEO of Leeds Mencap said: “We are passionate about helping to meet the needs of more people in East Leeds, and the wider community of those with learning disabilities, so this new facility can’t come soon enough for us. It is fantastic to see the building emerging from the foundations, and we are extremely grateful to each and every one of our partners and supporters who have helped us to get this far.

“We do need to keep working hard to raise funds to keep the project moving. To open the doors to an inviting place, and get the services up and running we still need a further £429,000.”
