Film and Cinema Clubs Top 2016 Charts

Expanding skills and meeting new people are top priorities for the New Year.

As the bells chime in 2016, Brits are readying themselves to revamp their social lives with a host of new hobbies and clubs on the New Year Resolution list according to new research from Paym, the easy way to pay friends and family using a mobile number.

The study reveals that while football was the club of choice for 2015, culture vultures are set to knock it off the top spot with film and cinema and book clubs. The membership of these clubs could be set to more than double as they top of the list of activities people are most interested in for 2016.

Those enrolling in new clubs and societies say it is to expand their social groups and make new friends (39%), learn a new skill or talent (35%) or expand their mind (35%). A quarter (24%) of people also want to lose weight after indulging this festive season, and will be joining swimming and dance clubs as part of their New Year Resolutions to get fit.

According to the research, nearly 20million people say they are currently a member of a club or society, committing significant time and money to their hobbies. Those considering their options should look at the cost of clubs, with the average annual spend topping £1,182. Yet it’s often the organiser of clubs and societies that ends up out of pocket – 61% of them say they are left chasing up late payments.

However only one in 10 (10%) of club members actually admit they forget to pay their club subs and one in five (19%) say they regularly have to stump up for someone else that has forgotten to pay their share on time.
