SMEs in Lancaster struck hardest by floods

Small- and medium-sized businesses in the Lancaster area were the hardest hit in the storms that pounded the North of England recently.

In a new report from insurance provider Simply Business, the North West suffered the most during the recent meteorological mayhem, with almost a third (28%) of all storm-related claims originating from the region.

Further, Lancaster was the most severely affected location in the North West, with over one third (36%) of all the region’s claims coming from the Lancashire city.

Carlisle in Cumbria came in second, accounting for 19% of the claims, while Blackburn was third at 17%.

Simply Business CEO Jason Stockwood said: “The storms over the past two months have been truly devastating for microbusinesses and SMEs in the North.

“Compared to large businesses, SMEs have so much more to lose when a natural disaster strikes.”

He continued: “For them, it’s not simply a flooded shop floor or a smashed window – but potentially months and months of lost revenue, which over the Christmas period can be so much more damaging.”
