This week’s Yorkshire appointments

The Tetley, Leeds’ centre for contemporary art and learning, has announced two new senior appointments.

Taking the new role of Creative Director is Bryony Bond, formerly of the Whitworth in Manchester, as President of Leeds Chamber of Commerce, Gerald Jennings, takes on the role of Chair of Trustees.

The Tetley’s first Creative Director, Bryony Bond is keen to build on the organisation’s emphasis on supporting artists, offering them new opportunities in an original and stimulating environment. Bryony brings to the role a wealth of experience, from curatorial positions that she has held at the Whitworth, National Museums Scotland, Camden Arts Centre and A Foundation in Liverpool.

Her extensive knowledge of contemporary visual arts practice is complemented by local Leeds involvement on the Board of visual arts commissioning organisation Pavilion.

In her new role, Bryony will have complete control of the creative direction of The Tetley. From working with artists, curating and programming exhibition spaces, the creative direction also will influence Bar & Kitchen, the events programme and communications, making The Tetley an entirely ‘artist-led’ experience.

Bryony Bond commented: “There’s so much already here for me to build on and I am really excited about continuing the excellent work started by the visionary co-founders Pippa Hale and Kerry Harker. The Tetley is in a great position to be the best showcase of creative contemporary talent which is incredibly strong right across the North of England. Best known for his current role as President of the Leeds Chamber of Commerce, following over 25 years’ property and retail experience, Gerald Jennings steps into the role of Chair, having been a Trustee of The Tetley since its inception.

Carter Towler

Leeds-based chartered surveyors Carter Towler has made a number of appointments and promotions across its business.

The company has promoted two long-serving members of staff, and has added a further three new property professionals to its team of 48.

Peter Bradbury, who has been with the company for 10 years, has been promoted and now heads up the retail department whilst Philip Shopland-Reed, ex-DTZ and CBRE, has joined the office department as a senior surveyor.

Former Sanderson Weatherall associate partner Chris Green has been appointed as head of Carter Towler’s professional services department where he will work alongside his newly promoted brother, Mark Green.

The business has also seen a significant increase in demand for its property management services and has appointed ex-Eversheds insolvency analyst, Will Parker. Will’s legal experience brings a valuable added dimension to the property management team which currently looks after over 1000 single use and multi-let properties across the North and Midlands.

Finally, Andy Carter who has headed the business for over 30 years has taken a position as non-executive co-chairman. David Priestley is the new executive co-chairman and Ian Greenwood has been promoted to managing director.

Ian Greenwood, who has been with the business for 27 years, concluded: “Carter Towler really is going from strength-to-strength across the whole of the business. Our clients are getting busier and asking for more from us, and we have also won some fantastic new business in the past six months including big instructions with a number of blue chip clients – it’s time to gear up”.

Jackie Ashton, LCF Barber Titleys

Harrogate law firm LCF Barber Titleys has appointed private client solicitor Jackie Ashton to its personal law team.

Jackie has previously worked for a number of well-known Yorkshire law firms, held an in-house position at a corporate organisation and spent several years lecturing on law at Leeds University and London Guildhall University.

Last year, Barber Titleys merged with LCF Law to create LCF Barber Titleys and one of the region’s strongest personal law teams was formed specialising in wills, wealth protection, succession planning, trusts, lasting powers of attorney, probate, inheritance disputes and personal injury trusts.

Jackie said: “After previously commuting to York, I was keen to work back in my hometown of Harrogate and LCF Barber Titleys is one of the town’s leading law firms, with an extremely reputable personal law team, which meant it was the obvious firm to approach. I’m delighted to join such a dynamic team, which assists a wide range of clients with all types of personal legal matters, and I’m already enjoying the challenges that this role offers.”

Mini Setty, Langleys Solicitors

Langleys Solicitors has strengthened its employment team with the appointment of Mini Setty as partner.

Mini joins Langleys from DWF in Leeds and previously worked at Eversheds and Shoosmiths. She advises employers on all areas of employment law but specialises in equality and diversity issues, executive terminations, employment issues on business transfers and strategic projects.

Having trained initially as a barrister, Mini has a wealth of advocacy experience which she has used to work with clients nationally. She has appeared at employment tribunals and the Employment Appeal Tribunal on behalf of employers across the country.

Kate Hindmarch, head of the employment team at Langleys, said: “Mini has considerable knowledge and experience of employment law and her appointment will further strengthen the advice and services we are able to offer our clients.”

Mini added: “I’m delighted to be joining the Langleys’ employment team which has a well-earned reputation for delivering high quality services to clients across a range of sectors.”

Langleys employs 340 people at its offices in York and Lincoln.

Philip Duquenoy, Key Capital Partners

Leeds-based private equity house Key Capital Partners (KCP) has appointed Philip Duquenoy as partner, based at its London office.

Philip joined the firm three years ago as a director. Prior to that, he spent five years working as the chief financial officer at James Harvard International Group (JHI), a private equity backed international specialist recruitment business.

During his time at JHI, Philip managed the raising of private equity finance, the completion and integration of two successful bolt-on acquisitions and the sale of the business to Hays plc.

In his new role at Key Capital Partners, Philip will continue to use his expertise gained in both industry and private equity to identify new investment opportunities and support the development of the firm’s portfolio companies.

During his time with Key Capital Partners, Philip has worked as a non-executive director in a number of the firm’s portfolio businesses including Hallam Medical and EarthStream Global. He also served on the board of Nurse Plus which was successfully exited in 2014.

Commenting on his new role at KCP, Philip said: “As SMEs continue to struggle to access equity investment of this size, working with KCP has given me the opportunity to support the growth plans of some really exciting businesses with huge potential. I look forward to continuing to work with Mike to increase the profile of our London office and to seek new investment opportunities.”

Andrew Fairest, Muse Developments

National developer and urban regeneration specialist, Muse Developments, has expanded its Leeds office with the appointment of Andrew Fairest as senior project manager.

Andrew has more than 20 years’ experience in the property sector and joins Muse from Barnsley College where he was director of property development for seven years. There he was responsible for development of the college’s £110m major capital development programme, IT infrastructure development, sustainability and estates and facilities management.

His previous experience includes project management roles at Jones Lang LaSalle, Mowlem and HSBC Corporate Real Estate.

He is the Recent Past Chair of the Yorkshire & Humber Region of the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) and a Fellow of Energy Managers Association (FEMA).

He will support Muse’s Leeds office in the delivery of its portfolio of projects across Yorkshire, the North East and East Midlands.

Rachel Robinson, Newton Solicitors

Rachel Robinson has joined the residential property team at Newton Solicitors head office in Knaresborough as a senior associate solicitor.

After training at the College of Law, York, Rachel Robinson (pictured), who lives in Harrogate, gained a degree in psychology at Loughborough University and completed her training contract with Cheshire County Council.

She qualified in 1998 and has focussed on residential property since 2001, specialising in leasehold transactions, including enfranchisement work.

She joins from Berwins Solicitors Ltd, Harrogate, where she was also a senior associate and her appointment takes the Newton Solicitors residential property team to 18 solicitors.

Newtons Solicitors, which has a £4m annual turnover, also has offices in Darlington, Harrogate, Ilkley, Leyburn, Northallerton, Ripon, Richmond, Stokesley, Thirsk and York.

Hardev Kaur, Wilkinson Woodward Norcliffe and Co

Huddersfield law firm Wilkinson Woodward Norcliffe and Co has announced the appointment of commercial and property specialist Hardev Kaur.

Hardev brings with her ten years’ experience in property law including the sale and purchase of freehold premises, granting of new leases and the assignment of existing leases. Her appointment forms part of Wilkinson Woodward Norcliffe and Co’s continuing plans to expand in Kirklees.

After obtaining a law degree in Leeds, Hardev went on to complete her legal studies at the College of Law in York before qualifying as a solicitor in 2006.

Hardev, who previously worked in Leeds, said: “I am delighted to be joining Wilkinson Woodward Norcliffe and Co – a long established and trusted name in legal services in the area. I am looking forward to working with businesses in Kirklees and further afield.”

Jordan Kenefick and Max Williamson, Lambert Smith Hampton

National commercial property consultancy Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) has announced the appointment of two new surveyors across Yorkshire.

Jordan Kenefick, a RICS registered valuer, has joined the Valuation team in Leeds from Halifax-based Walker Singleton, where he worked on a range of commercial and residential instructions.

Max Williamson has joined LSH’s Sheffield office as a graduate surveyor following completion of his master’s degree in Real Estate Finance and Investment at the University of the West of England.

Matthew Scrimshaw, LSH’s head of region for Yorkshire and the North East, said: “We’re delighted that Jordan and Max have joined the LSH team in Yorkshire. Their appointments reflect our continued commitment to investing in and nurturing young talent in the property sector.

The appointments are the latest steps in a significant expansion for LSH in Yorkshire. In March 2015 the company acquired the 260-strong ES Group nationally, with the two Leeds teams moving into a single office at Bond Court in the city centre in September. The Sheffield team also moved to new premises at 2 St Paul’s Square in May 2015.

Chris Keane, Ward Hadaway

Law firm Ward Hadaway has strengthened the specialist insolvency and corporate recovery team at its Leeds office with the recruitment of Chris Keane.

Chris joins the team as an Associate Solicitor, having specialised in advising on a range of insolvency issues over the past 10 years.

He has experience advising on both personal and corporate insolvency matters, on a contentious and non-contentious basis. He advises financiers, insolvency practitioners and other insolvency professionals and directors as well as creditors on all issues arising in stressed and distressed scenarios.

Chris’s specialist expertise relates to contentious insolvency matters, where he focuses on substantial and highly technical claims brought by insolvency practitioners, often involving fraud and complex multi-jurisdictional recovery options.

The insolvency and corporate recovery team at Ward Hadaway’s Leeds office is now five-strong with a wide range of expertise and experience, dealing with all insolvency-related issues.

Gillian Kaufman, partner in the insolvency and corporate recovery team at Ward Hadaway Leeds, said: “Chris is a perfect fit for the team so we are delighted he has decided to join us.
