Anfield regeneration efforts to deliver £10m training hotel
The £260m regeneration of Anfield is due to take a step forward today (February 19) with the approval of a 100-bed hotel, business hub and environmental enhancements in Anfield Village.
Liverpool City Council is expected to give the greenlight to measures that will allow Your Housing Group (YHG) to create a £10m hotel at Anfield Square, along with a new facility for businesses.
If approved, the hotel will support training and employment opportunities for young people in the hospitality sector.
YHG is seeking the long-term lease of the Anfield Square site and plans to move its offices to the business hub. Currently, its team is based at Birchwood Park, Warrington.
Kathy Cowell, chair YHG, said: “This is in its very early stages, but we are very excited about the plans which our board recently approved.
“We have already invested heavily in Anfield and see this as underlining our strong and on-going commitment to the area.”
She added: “Subject to Cabinet approval we are looking forward to progressing with a number of key opportunities, in what will be a significant year for delivering the hotel.”
The wider regeneration efforts in Anfield are spearheaded by the city council, in partnership with Liverpool FC and YHG. The transformation includes the redevelopment of the football club’s main stand, along with new homes, revamped shopping facilities, offices, a new public square and the training hotel.
The city’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ann O’Byrne, said: “In the two and a half years that the project has been running we have made great progress with new homes and public spaces, new leisure facilities, new job and training opportunities and improvements to Stanley Park.
“The creation of a training hotel will be a vital part of the whole vision for the Anfield area and the potential of YHG relocating their regional office into the heart of Anfield sends a very strong message about their commitment and will bring added footfall all week and attract further activity.”
She added: “The Anfield partners’ aim is about delivering comprehensive regeneration and considerable long-term benefits to residents and businesses and to improve the overall visitor experience. It is a physical regeneration, but it’s also very much about rebuilding communities and hope and pride, with Anfield residents very much the fourth partner in the project.”
Launched in 2013, the Anfield Regeneration Project has seen 370 homes either built or refurbished, 220 derelict properties demolished and 23 restored through the council’s homes for £1 scheme.
