Onset of wearable forms changing web design challenges
With the evolution of the web on the desktop, then laptop, smartphone, and tablets the web designers have changed their designing paradigms. With the pace of time, they have kept their relevancy with the changing forms of the computing devices.
The web on the Desktops
It was just before a decade, the Web 2.0 concepts had gained grounds. The entry of W3C web development standards and features in browsers had inspired web designers to reap of the real estates of the big screens.
PHP and Ajax-like dynamic web elements have made it UX focused. Personalization and reviews have made it more palatable and bespoken for the end-users.
It was a golden period for the UX designers in the 2004 and afterward when the designers had the opportunity to make a big name and cash both. The big scales of redesigning projects accomplished with the understanding of the importance of usability and user experience on the web.
Universities were offering UX programs for UX skill sets like ahem, architecture, etc. and had produced great talents in the industry for designing on the web.
Startups and enterprise alike had recognized the web design with UX in mind as a key differentiator in business as well as for ranking.
The web on the Smartphones & Tablets
In the time of 2008 and onwards, the mobile era began, and Apple has taken the lead in designing in all fronts of electronic gadgets, software, and on the web. Thus, UX era for mobile had started with it and compromise with real estate of screen dilute the user experiences further.
Mobile Limitations
Device form related limitations became prominent, and web designers have to take many alternative routes to accomplish their intended designing experiences with it.
Touch based operations, weak CPU power, poor connectivity, and so forth had overwhelmed the web designing challenges. The emergence of various tools, templates, and frameworks had made it possible, anyhow, to give the best possible user experiences on the tiny screens of smartphones.
Though tablets had relatively big device form, its limited use cases had sidelined it significantly.
Beginning of RWD Era
One thing happened noteworthy in the mobile era, and it was the prevalence of responsive web design everywhere. It has evolved new and transformed an old class of web designers as responsive web designers. Tools and frameworks for RWD had wiped off billion dollars from the market!
Now, we have devices overtly, connected overtly, and our web contented overtly. Our storytelling habits and play with big data has gotten a lot of limitations on the tiny forms of the computing/handheld devices.
Amalgamate of Web and Mobile
The Recent development of the concept of progressive web apps has sparked a new flame in the age-old burning issue “Native or Web” turf. Now, mobile web will progressively turn into the native mobile app working offline with all desired native experiences.
This progressive web app will deliver complete web experiences when connected to The Internet and start updating the highly personalized content it has, actions, activities, and interactions. Now, the mobile app will have URL parameter in its basket and all indexing abilities to rank top in SERPs of the web.
Now Time to Smart Wearable Web
With the beginning of smart wearable devices era, device form factors have further shrunken UX elements on the tinier screens of Smart Watches, Smart Glasses, and so forth.
Moreover, inevitable dependencies over smartphones or tablets as extended screens made UI designing a big challenge for the web designers of today. A fading thin layer of UX has limited the roles of designers and a good time for the template makers with greater simplicity on the user interfaces.
Conclusion:
Despite these heartbreaking designing challenges, user interface designers are excited to explore the unknown future on the various smart wearable devices, smart watches in particular.
If you ever have watched the science fiction movies like ‘Star Track’ and notice the 3D user interface emerging from the wearables, you have sure idea that where our UI designing is going on. Of course, any day our human generations would have it and the designers of the time will think desktop/laptop era as the stone age of the computing screens.
