Haden Freeman completes work on $4m Qatari chemical storage facility

Haden Freeman, the North West process engineering design consultancy, has completed work on a multi-million dollar chemical storage facility in the Middle East.

The Manchester-headquartered firm designed and managed the infrastructure of a $4m facility created for US-based oil services firm Baker Hughes at Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar.

The 118,400 sq ft facility will store the chemical ingredients of drilling fluids used in the oil and gas industry.

Haden Freeman’s work on the site, provided from its Doha office with support from its Manchester HQ, encompassed the design, installation and commissioning of a new incinerator unit that will allow Baker Hughes to ramp up production by a third.

Haden Freeman’s project director, Ian Dunkley, said: “We have a great relationship with Baker Hughes and have worked for them in several locations over the years.

“At Ras Laffan, the challenge was adapting our working practices to meet the cultural differences, as well as designing the facility to meet the extreme weather requirements due to heat and occasional heavy rain falls which often create localised flooding.”

He added: “The facility had to be designed to enable it to remain operational under all conditions.”

The company’s work at Ras Laffan Industrial City closely follows another project delivered for petrochemical firm Qatar Vinyl Company (QVC).

The head of projects at QVC, Adnan Abdullah Shaikh Al-Yafei, commented: “The Incinerator project was completed on time and to budget and is now producing to the required quality in record quantities.

“We hadn’t used Haden Freeman prior to them undertaking this project. They proved to be extremely capable and I’m sure we’ll go on to form a lasting relationship.”
