Asda sees biggest fall in sales as UK’s ‘big four’ supermarkets all suffer

As all of the UK’s ‘big four’ supermarkets performed poorly throughout the last quarter, it was Asda that reported the biggest drop in overall sales.

The Leeds-headquartered supermarket chain suffered a 5.1% fall in sales, according to Kantar Worldpanel, which also revealed Morrisons saw sales drop by 2.6%.

Sales at Tesco dropped by 1.3%, and Sainsbury’s remained the strongest performer of the ‘big four’, with sales down 0.4.%.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar Worldpanel: “Sainsbury’s was the best performing, though sales fell back by 0.4% – the first time the retailer has dipped into decline since July last year, though it retained its 16.5% share of the market.

“This marks the first time that each of the big four has simultaneously witnessed a drop in sales since April 2015.”

Following this significant dip in sales, Asda now commands a 16% share of the market.

Lidl was the fastest growing with sales up by 15.4%, and Aldi saw a 12.5% increase in sales.
