SafeShop app makes it easy for small businesses to comply with health & safety laws

A free new SafeShop mobile app has been launched to make it easy for independent shops and small businesses to comply with health and safety maintenance laws, helping them to avoid prosecution and reduce insurance risk.

SafeShop, which is available free from the Google and Apple app stores, helps retailers and other small businesses to identify risks and track the maintenance schedules of equipment within their premises, in line with current legal requirements. It also puts them in touch with qualified and approved local contractors to undertake any tasks identified.

Owners and managers need never miss a mandatory electrical safety or gas check, or a fire safety equipment test, because the app sets up automatic alerts. It provides a personalised risk rating, together with an individual health & safety maintenance schedule that guides businesses step-by-step through the actions they need to take for their specific premises.

“Corner shops and small businesses are subject to similar health and safety laws as major corporations, yet they don’t have the specialist advisers who can keep them safe and compliant,” said Len Simmons, Director of app developer BigHandWorks.

He continued: “SafeShop makes statutory maintenance easy and opens up access to the same level of expertise and professionalism available to larger companies. By demonstrating that they have professional processes to manage risk and improve safety, these businesses have the potential to reduce their insurance premiums.”

BigHandWorks (BHW) is a tech start-up company, formed of a team of experienced property and facilities management professionals, combining years of industry knowledge and expertise of health and safety and risk management.

BHW has also released the SafeShop Contractor mobile app, which is a platform for qualified professionals who carry out the maintenance works. The app works in tandem with SafeShop, benefiting from combined small business workflows and access to job opportunities - matched to the contractor’s skills and geographical location.

Both apps are free to download, but there is an additional small subscription fee for those contractors wishing to be alerted to or to search for job opportunities.
