This week’s Yorkshire appointments

Carter Towler has announced a trio of promotions.

Josh Holmes is now an associate director, Steve Spittlehouse has been promoted and is now an associate surveyor, and Mark Green has been promoted to associate surveyor.

In addition, the Leeds-based company has also just won three awards.

Firstly it has been voted Estates Gazette’s Yorkshire Overall Regional Deals winner, on top of that Josh has been named North and West Yorkshire Deal Maker and third, Carter Towler has retained the EGi North & West Yorkshire Deals winner title – for the 9th consecutive year!

Edward Nuttman, Ward Hadaway

Edward Nuttman has joined the Leeds office of Ward Hadaway as a partner after more than 12 years specialising in advising on a wide range of Employment issues.

He has extensive knowledge of the transport industry, having advised household name bus, coach and haulage companies throughout the country, whilst in the healthcare sector he has advised several NHS Foundation Trusts, a Primary Care Trust, an Ambulance Trust and a domiciliary care services provider.

As well as providing legal advice to clients, Edward has also prepared and delivered award-winning bespoke employment law training nationally.

He regularly advises on all aspects of employment and industrial relations work, as well as high value breach of contract and restrictive covenant claims.

Edward’s experience includes preventing several calls for industrial action by Trade Unions, advising a multi-channel retailer on a national restructure affecting five sites, and successfully defending an Employment Tribunal discrimination claim valued at over £2 million.

Grant Martin, Calbee UK

Grant Martin has joined Leeds-based Calbee UK, the first European subsidiary of Calbee Inc, the £1.2bn Japanese savoury snack supplier, as business development manager.

As business development manager, Grant will call upon his previous experience working for a UK-based sales organisation specialising in snacks, confectionery and perishables, to secure further listings within the Cash & Carry, Convenience and Export sectors.

Richard Robinson, managing director of Calbee UK, said: “Grant is a great addition to our growing team here in Leeds.

“His previous experience and values are a sure sign that he will fit in. We are confident that with his additional support we can push ahead into new markets and maintain the focus that we have on achieving our sales targets and becoming a leading savoury snack supplier in the UK.”

Calbee UK has appointed 50 people who are based at both its head office in Leeds and manufacturing facility in Deeside, North Wales.

The company’s first branded snack, Yushoi Snapea rice sticks, which launched in June 2015, has secured listings in Tesco, Morrisons, The Cooperative, World Foods Market, Selfridges, Ocado and WH Smith.

Cian Glasheen. Brewster Bye

Leeds-based architecture practice Brewster Bye, has expanded its team with the appointment of Cian Glasheen as a project architect.

Cian brings a wealth of experience to his new role and has spent the last seven years working in London for a number of firms including Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.

In recent years he was worked across a wide range of residential, mixed use, hotel and conservation projects.

In his new role at Brewster Bye, he is currently working on a number of affordable housing schemes and is involved in the redevelopment of a hostel for longstanding Leeds charity, St George’s Crypt.

Chris Austin, managing director at Headingley based Brewster Bye Architects, said: “Cian has an impressive CV after working on a wide range of notable projects for several very reputable practices and he is a welcome addition to our team.

Karen Sewell, Geoff Bowman and David Warwick, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff

Professional services and engineering firm WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff in Leeds has recruited three senior appointments.

Karen Sewell has been appointed as Europe, Middle East, India and Africa general counsel and UK head of legal.

With 18 years’ experience working on international corporate and finance transactions, Karen joins WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff from law firm Addleshaw Goddard LLP where she was a partner in the firm’s finance and projects division.

Karen, who will be based in Leeds and London, trained at Linklaters, studied at Oxford University, and also spent a number of years working for US firm Gibson Dunn in London and New York.

Geoff Bowman will head up the private sector development team, bringing a wealth of knowledge in his specialist area of transport planning. Geoff joins the company from his previous role at SCP where he set up the company’s Leeds office.

Geoff studied Civil Engineering at Sheffield University and has worked in Yorkshire for more than 30 years, advising on traffic issues for a range of high profile schemes including Granary Wharf in Leeds and the new Kirkstall Bridge Retail Park.

Sustainable buildings specialist David Warwick also joins the company as associate in the building services team. David has spent the last five years working in the Middle East for the sustainability department at the Urban Planning Council in Abu Dhabi.

David was responsible for reviewing and approving the energy performance of all projects submitted for certification and major schemes include the Masdar Headquarters and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.

Matthew Hague, Zawar Shah and Lindsey Cross, Cartwright King

Law firm Cartwright King has further bolstered its presence across Yorkshire with a raft of new hires.

The firm, which has offices in Sheffield and Leeds, has appointed three solicitors across core areas of criminal defence and family law.

Cartwright King’s Sheffield office welcomes two criminal defence solicitors, Matthew Hague and Zawar Shah.

Having extensive experience in Crown Court litigation, duty solicitor Hague has handled numerous high profile cases. His practice has also encompassed quasi criminal work such as defending applications made by the Police and Local Authorities to the County Court for ‘gang injunctions’ against alleged gang members – also known as ‘gangbos’.

Originally called to the bar, Shah has 15 years’ experience as a criminal defence solicitor, working on cases from the police station to the Court of Appeal.

A duty solicitor holding higher rights in criminal proceedings, Shah is also an elected committee member of the Society of Asian Lawyers, a committee member of the Ethnic Minorities Lawyers Division at The Law Society (London), a registered lawyer with the Football Association and liaises with the Solicitors Regulation Authority on diversity issues.

The firm has also appointed family law solicitor Lindsey Cross, who joins the Leeds office with 12 years’ experience of divorce, matrimonial finance cases, cohabitation disputes and disputes regarding children. Cross also has extensive experience in dealing with domestic violence issues and protective injunctions as well as pre-nuptial agreements and cohabitation agreements.

Martina Baloch and Monika Bone, Williamsons Solicitors

Williamsons Solicitors has brought a strong European dimension to its wills and probate department with its latest appointments.

Solicitors Martina Baloch, who will be based at the company’s Driffield office, and Monika Bone, who will operate from Hull, both hail from the Czech Republic and speak a number of European languages.

After qualifying as a solicitor in 2009 in the UK, Ms Baloch worked in family law before gaining experience in drafting wills, administering estates and dealing with powers of attorney. She also provides consultations to law firms in Prague and advises parties with a UK connection.

Ms Bone completed her training in Huddersfield before gaining experience with firms in East Yorkshire and Leeds. Her specialisms include preparation of wills, administration of estates and trusts and making applications for grants of probate.

Peter Saunders, Experia

Barnsley-based Experia, the sensory equipment specialist, has appointed Peter Saunders as managing director.

Peter will lead the business as it grows its product range and increases its market presence following a turnover of £1.8m in 2015, which the company aims to increase by 20% this year.

Before joining Experia, Peter held senior positions in the manufacturing and engineering markets and is regarded as an expert in analysing business and process performance to enhance outputs. His roles spanned the UK, Europe, Turkey and The USA.

As managing director of Experia, Peter will oversee the company’s growth and continued expansion across the UK and internationally, building upon its presence in the American market and increasing orders from the Middle East.
