Darlington College teams with fastest growing youth movement

Darlington College has joined forces with the country’s fastest growing youth movement to offer students the opportunity to take part in a life-changing summer.

The College is working with National Citizen Service (NCS) to extend the reach of the government-backed scheme on campus, ensuring that students and parents hear all about the benefits the initiative offers.

NCS lent their support to the College’s Open Door Festival on Saturday with a EURO 2016 inspired FIFA 2016 tournament. The NCS team was also on hand to supply advice and guidance to prospective and current students of the college.

Over 4,700 teenagers in the North East have already said yes to the summer-of-a-lifetime with NCS.

Darlington College are also encouraging their prospective students to take part in NCS this summer, so that they arrive with the confidence, skills and experience to succeed.

Darlington College Marketing Manager, Claire Turner said: “NCS offer an invaluable opportunity for students to gain real life and team working skills, enhancing their employability prospects and for many improving their confidence“

“Darlington College were delighted to have NCS presence at both the employability fair we hosted in May and latterly our Community Open Door Festival to spread the word on the opportunities that are available for our young people.“

Kim Smith, Contract Director for NCS North East, said: “I am looking forward to enhancing our relationship with Darlington College so that we can collectively help young people thrive as they take their next steps in life.

“This summer’s NCS programme is set to be the biggest yet and it will be fantastic to see so many teenagers from Darlington involved.“

Teenagers aged 16-17 can benefit from NCS. The rite-of-passage scheme empowers them to get out of their zones via an adventure packed residential programme. Along the way, teens will develop extra skills that accompany their study and future plans for work and life.

During the first stage of NCS, participants enjoy a week living at an outdoor adventure centre, making new friends and enjoying life living away from home.

Next up, teens will build the skills employers value most; confidence, leadership and communication. Living away from home again, this time somewhere in the Darlington area, they’ll build new skills for life.

Using the skills they’ve picked up during their journey so far, teens then plan, organise and deliver their own social action projects that make a real difference to their local community. In the last two years alone young people have collectively dedicated more than eight million hours to volunteering through NCS.

NCS will never cost more than £50, a fee that covers accommodation, transport, food, everything. Students eligible for free school meals can take part for £10.
