Manchester named UK’s most popular city for job searches outside London
Manchester has beaten off a raft of other Northern cities to become one of the most popular places in the UK for those seeking a new job.
New data from market intelligence firm SimilarWeb looked at keyword job searches made across job sites Indeed, Total Jobs, CV Library, Jobsite and Reed between January and March this year.
The research found that Manchester, commanding an 11.48% share of the searches, was the most sought-after city for jobseekers behind London.
Regional rival Liverpool came in seventh place with a 5.42% share, while Wigan came 13th at 1.03% and Wirral 15th with 0.63%.
Based on desktop searches, the analysis discovered that London accounted for well over one-third (37.4%) of the job searches.
Conversely, the findings suggest that jobseekers in other European countries are less eager to work in the capital. Over in France, Paris came in second place (16%) to Toulouse (21%). In Germany, Berlin was top of the search list but with a much smaller share in comparison to London, at 21%.
SimilarWeb’s digital insights manager, Pascal Cohen, said: “Searches for Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Lyon, London, and Manchester drive the most traffic to job sites in Europe.
“However the dominance of London for job searches in the UK shows no signs of diminishing.”
He added: “No other European city examined has anything close to exerting London’s recruitment pull.”
