Yorkshire cable cleat manufacturer digs deep to secure first Peruvian order

North Yorkshire-based cable cleat manufacturer, Ellis has secured its first ever order from Peru.

Ellis’s Alpha cable cleats were specified by energy company, Conenhua through local distributor Logytec, for installation in a major mining project in Tambomayo in Peru’s Caylloma district.

The Alpha cable cleats have been installed in a 138kV substation, which will provide energy to the mine when it goes into operation in July.

Alpha cleats are manufactured in extruded aluminium and feature an easy one-bolt fixing, and zinc-plated steel closing fasteners. They were chosen by Conenhua as a result of electrical safety concerns, which were alleviated by the proven short-circuit withstand of the products.

Tony Conroy, sales director of Ellis, said: “Our export strategy is relatively straightforward. We identify a suitable market, seek out a suitable local distributor and then provide full sales, marketing and product support.

“Without this kind of approach it would be extremely difficult to even find out about opportunities like the Tambomayo mining project, let alone secure the specification.”

Tony added: “Upon entering Latin America with export in mind, we quickly realised that doing business there required the building of personal relationships like nowhere else in the world.

“You need to be able to travel to the different markets regularly, and when you’re not visiting be available to talk to your contacts on the phone. In some markets we’re comfortable handling this from our Rillington HQ, but when it came to Latin America it was apparent we needed an Ellis representative working on our behalf.

“Gabriela Castro-Fontoura is based in Uruguay, and her knowledge and on-the-ground input have been instrumental in the success we’re currently enjoying across the continent.”

In addition to the first Peruvian specification, Ellis has also secured first time orders in Colombia and Costa Rica earlier this year.

Tony concluded: “All of our products undergo third party testing prior to launch, meaning we know their exact short-circuit withstand limits.

“We’re also happy to carry out project specific testing should a contractor require that extra degree of reassurance – after all an electrical installation is not only a vital part of any project infrastructure, it can also prove extremely dangerous if elements of it are incorrectly fitted or under-specified.”
